Zhuhai’s Gongbei Customs announced in a statement yesterday that its officers seized 1.56 grams of methamphetamine (commonly known as “ice”) at the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB) .

According to the statement, on that day, at around 12 p.m., customs officers at the mega-bridge’s Zhuhai Port (checkpoint) passenger clearance hall noticed a man behaving strangely and immediately intercepted him for inspection.

Upon examination, they discovered a transparent plastic bag containing suspicious white crystals and another bag of red powder inside a cigarette packet in his trouser pocket. The bags weighed 1.56 grams and 0.17 grams, respectively, according to the statement, which added that analyses by a professional institution confirmed that the substances tested positive for methamphetamine and caffeine.

The statement pointed out that direct ingestion of methamphetamine stimulates the central nervous system in the brain, leading to an extremely high risk of addiction. It may trigger mental disorders, organ failure, and induce violent behaviour.

Gongbei Customs reminded the public that, according to various laws and regulations such as the “Criminal Law of the People’s Republic of China” and the “Anti-Drug Law of the People’s Republic of China,” drugs refer to opium, heroin, methamphetamine (ice), morphine, cannabis, cocaine, and other narcotic and psychotropic substances controlled by the state that can lead to addiction. Smuggling or transporting drugs, regardless of the quantity, is subject to criminal liability and will be penalised accordingly, the statement warned.
