The Macau Consumer Council (CC) announced in a statement on Friday that the Macau and Hengqin consumer protection authorities jointly released the latest outcomes of their collaborative efforts, highlighting new progress in cross-border consumer rights protection under the “Macau + Hengqin” strategic positioning.

According to the statement, a joint meeting was held in the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin, bringing together representatives from both sides to present cooperation achievements, discuss rule alignment in consumer protection, and explore innovative cross-border collaboration models.

The event was attended by CC President Leong Pek San; Peng Jiuru, deputy director of the Commerce and Business Services Bureau of the Cooperation Zone; and Lin Shennan, secretary-general of the zone’s Consumer Association, among others, the statement noted.

The statement quoted Leong as saying that the meeting demonstrated the progress of Macau-Hengqin cooperation in consumer protection and helped build a new framework for consumer safeguards in both places. She said that the CC will strengthen coordination with its Hengqin counterpart to deepen synergy and jointly create a safe, reliable and convenient cross-border consumption environment.

Meanwhile, Peng said that both sides will work together to improve the cross-border consumer rights protection linkage mechanism, promote efficient connection and collaborative handling of consumer complaints, and effectively enhance confidence and satisfaction in cross-border consumption, the statement added.

During the meeting, both sides cited the comparative testing of thermal underwear conducted jointly by Macau and Hengqin as an example to introduce collaborative product testing, providing practical references for consumer purchasing decisions, the statement said.

Meanwhile, on the same day, the official website of the In-Depth Cooperation Zone’s Consumer Association was officially launched, the statement noted, adding that it is interconnected with information from the CC, enabling information sharing on certified shops, consumer prices, and consumer protection laws and regulations between Macau and Hengqin.

The launch marked concrete progress in cooperation projects, the statement said, promoting the integration of people’s livelihoods and advancing the goal of “dual-city integration”. Following the release, representatives from both consumer protection authorities also took part in thematic discussions focusing on cross-border consumption issues, jointly exploring new approaches towards consumer rights protection, the statement added.
