The Ophthalmology Department of the Islands Healthcare Complex – Macao Medical Centre of Peking Union Medical College Hospital (Macao Union Medical Centre) in Cotai has officially launched routine ambulatory cataract surgery, in coordination with the Health Bureau, according to a statement from the medical centre on Friday.

Since mid-July, three lead surgeons, Dr Chen Zhe from the Macao Union Medical Centre and Dr Lam Ka Meng and Dr Leong Wa Cheong from the Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre, have been performing daily procedures, with more than 100 patients already treated and their sight restored, the statement noted.

The statement said that the centre has adopted the ambulatory surgery model successfully implemented at Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH), allowing eligible patients to complete admission, surgery, and discharge within about three hours. The statement added that for those requiring overnight care due to special circumstances, ambulatory surgery can be converted to inpatient care, ensuring flexibility and patient convenience.

In addition, for complex cataract cases, the statement said that the centre leverages the expertise of specialists from Beijing. Experienced PUMCH experts are invited regularly to provide support in Macau, further strengthening cooperation between Beijing and Macau and ensuring medical safety and quality.

With the ongoing optimisation of cataract surgery services and strengthened departmental coordination, the Macao Union Medical Centre expects to steadily expand its treatment capacity, bringing long-term benefits to local residents, the statement concluded.
