Macau Special Administrative Region Chief Executive Sam Hou Fai visited the Macao Economic and Trade Office to the European Union in Brussels yesterday to familiarise himself with its operations and give instructions for its future work, the Macau Government Information Bureau (GCS) said in a statement today.

Lúcia Abrantes dos Santos, who heads the office, accompanied Sam on a tour of the premises and briefed him on its work. Sam exchanged views with the office staff to gain a better understanding of its operations.

According to the statement, Sam said that the office is particularly important for enhancing economic and trade cooperation between Macao and the EU. He emphasised that the office should strengthen cooperation with the Chinese embassy in Belgium and the Chinese Mission to the EU, maintain close working relationships, and actively organise cooperation projects with the EU and various sectors in Brussels to consolidate and expand the economic and trade partnership between Macau and the EU and its member states. Furthermore, Sam said, the office should strengthen its ties with the European External Action Service (EEAS) to help restart the EU-Macao Joint Committee meeting mechanism and promote cooperation and exchanges between Macau and the EU in areas such as trade, high-tech industries, and talent training.

The chief-of-office of the Chief Executive’s Office, Chan Kak, accompanied the Sam on the inspection.

Sam and his entourage are slated to arrive back from their nine-day, four-nation (Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, Belgium/EU headquarters) in Macau today.
