The 2026 Macao International Environmental Co-operation Forum & Exhibition (2026MIECF) kicked off yesterday, with senior officials highlighting the importance of green transformation, low-carbon development, and international collaboration in advancing sustainable growth.
Hosted by the local government, the three-day event is being held at The Venetian Macao’s Cotai Expo under the theme “Low-Carbon, Zero-Waste Cities: Embarking on Global Collaboration”.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Secretary for Economy and Finance Anton Tai Kin Ip said the event reflects both national and global priorities in addressing environmental challenges. He noted that the nation’s 15th Five-Year Plan emphasises accelerating green transformation, while Macau will align its own policies with national strategies, including its long-term decarbonisation goals and upcoming environmental protection plan for 2026–2030.
Tai added that the forum serves as a key platform for regional and international exchange, promoting waste reduction, resource utilisation, and industrial upgrading. He highlighted new features such as the “Zero-Waste Circular Economy Exhibition Zone”, as well as the participation of global energy enterprises showcasing innovative solutions to support sustainable development.
Representing the Ministry of Ecology and Environment in Beijing, Zhao Yingmin said the forum’s theme of low-carbon and zero-waste cities reflects the shared global direction towards green development. He noted that the nation has made progress in reducing pollution, improving ecological conditions, and expanding green industries, while continuing to contribute to global climate governance and international cooperation. He added that Macau plays an important role in the nation’s modernisation and international engagement, and called for deeper collaboration in green development, particularly within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) and through global partnerships.
Also addressing the ceremony, Director-General of the Department of Energy Conservation and Comprehensive Utilisation at the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) Wang Peng emphasised the role of industry in driving green transformation. He said that China will continue to promote renewable energy, green manufacturing, and resource recycling systems, while strengthening technological innovation and industrial upgrading to support sustainable economic growth. Wang added that advancing green and low-carbon industries requires joint efforts across sectors, with cooperation in technology, finance, and human resources essential to building a more sustainable future.
The three-day event has brought together government officials, industry leaders, and experts to explore environmental technologies and cooperation opportunities. Through forums, exhibitions, and business matching sessions, the 2026MIECF aims to strengthen Macau’s role as a regional platform for green development and support the transition towards low-carbon, zero-waste cities.
