A local man was arrested last Thursday for assaulting a local female high school student in Rampa dos Cavaleiros (黑沙環斜路), PSP spokesman Cheong Heon Fan said during a regular press conference yesterday.

Cheong identified the suspect as a male surnamed Lei, who is in his fifties and works as a security guard.

According to Cheong, the victim was walking along Rampa dos Cavaleiros (黑沙環斜路) in Areia Preta district at 5:45 p.m. on August 2 when she was suddenly attacked by a man (Lei), unknown to her, who struck her on the head and verbally insulted her with foul language before running away. The victim, who sustained minor injuries, immediately reported the case to the police.

Through their citywide CCTV surveillance system, the police identified Lei as the suspect and apprehended him near Avenida de Venceslau de Morais (慕拉士大馬路) at 10:30 p.m. last Thursday. Under questioning, Lei admitted to the assault, claiming he attacked the student because he was in a “bad mood”.

Lei has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing charges of causing bodily harm and insult.
