The Public Security Police (PSP) arrested a local lorry driver in his sixties for attacking a police officer on Sunday, a PSP statement said that night.
According to the statement, a traffic police officer was carrying out traffic law enforcement around Rua do Padre António Roliz (羅神父街) at around 5:10 p.m. on Sunday, when he discovered a lorry illegally parked outside Si Toi Industrial Building on Rua do Passadiço (通衢街) – a short street next to Rua do Padre António Roliz.
Consequently, the statement said, the policeman approached the driver and told him to move his vehicle, but the driver not only verbally abused him with profanities but also brandished a metal hydraulic jack handle, initially as a threat. The officer immediately warned the driver and told him to show his ID card and driving licence, but the driver ignored the officer’s instructions and drove away, the statement said.
According to the statement, the officer then pursued the lorry on his motorcycle and eventually intercepted it on Rua do Padre António Roliz outside Vang Kei Supermarket. When the officer instructed the driver to exit the vehicle for investigation, the statement said, he became agitated, got out, and attacked the officer with the jack handle, which caused the officer to sustain slight injuries to his arm.
Subsequently, the statement said, the driver was subdued by the traffic police officer, an off-duty police officer who by chance was walking past the location where the incident occurred, and another passer-by.
According to the statement, the driver’s attack also damaged the traffic policeman’s equipment.
The suspect has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) for further investigation, facing charges of causing bodily harm in aggravated circumstances, aggravated insult, aggravated property damage, resisting police authorities, and unreasonable possession of weapons or other tools.
