Integrated resort operator MGM and Poly Culture announced in a joint statement on Tuesday that “POLY MGM MUSEUM” in Zape is set to present its new exhibition “Luminous Brilliance: The Artistry of Zibo Liuli” that will showcase close to 180 historic and contemporary glass masterpieces.
Kicking off from October through March next year, the statement said that the exhibition is held in conjunction with the National Museum of China and the Zibo Ceramics and Glass Museum.
“Liuli”, as defined by AI chatbot Gemini, is a traditional Chinese crystal glass art, renowned for its rich colours, luminous depth, and thousands of years of cultural history.
Zibo in Shandong Province is a historic centre for Chinese glassmaking, having a thousand years of continuous tradition and recognised intangible cultural heritage, the statement said, adding that it taken along the Silk Road to destinations across Asia and beyond.
The exhibition spans three chapters, with the first “Forging a Millennium Legacy” highlighting the deep roots of Chinese glassmaking, while Roman, Sasanian Persian, and Islamic glass from the National Museum of China are also displayed alongside the Chinese works, the statement said.
The second, “Eternal Iridescence”, looks at various techniques to highlight the colour palette and Eastern aesthetics of liuli, the statement said. The final section “Exquisite Objects of Timeless Elegance” highlights outstanding contemporary glass works.
Moreover, the exhibition includes signature works such as the Grape Shaped Glass Bottle, Liuli Phoenix Crown, and Butterflies and Spirit Serpent Floral Crown. The statement added that the exhibition also features a liuli garden, which is “anchored by the Twelve Flower Deities installation”, along with works by US glass artist Dale Chihuly from the MGM collection.
Poly Culture’s patented multifunctional holographic display cases aim to tell the stories of the exhibits, while also being interactive, the statement said, adding that a large-scale glass art installation is to be displayed in MGM MACAU’s Grande Praça during the exhibition period.
