A man from the Chinese mainland was arrested on Friday for sexually harassing a local girl at a restaurant, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Wong Chi Weng said during a regular press conference yesterday.
Wong identified the suspect as a jobless man in his 40s, surnamed Liu.
Wong did not reveal the girl’s age, merely saying that she is a local secondary school student.
According to the victim’s statement to the police, she was in a restaurant on Avenida do Nordeste (黑沙環東北大馬路) when the suspect approached her, slapped her hip, and made sexually suggestive remarks.
The victim reported the incident to the police, who arrived at the restaurant and arrested Liu.
Under questioning, Liu admitted that he had consumed a large amount of alcohol while dining at the restaurant, but denied touching the victim or sexually harassing her.
However, Wong said that following an investigation, police found strong indications that Liu had committed the crime of sexual harassment.
Liu has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), where he faces a charge of sexual harassment.
The suspect faces up to a year behind bars.
