The Social Welfare Bureau (IAS) opened its heat shelter in Ilha Verde yesterday after the Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) issued a Yellow hot weather alert in the morning. The facility will remain open until the mercury goes down, according to an IAS statement yesterday.

The shelter is located on the ground floor of the Bairro da Ilha Verde Building, at 34 Rua Leste da Ilha Verde (青洲東街34號青洲坊大廈E1的避暑中心).

The Yellow alert is issued by the local observatory when the weather is forecast to be “very hot”. It is activated when temperatures are expected to reach or exceed 33 degrees Celsius in certain areas. An Orange alert signifies “extremely hot” weather, typically issued when maximum temperatures are expected to surpass 34 or 35 degrees Celsius.

The bureau urged residents to pay attention to the health conditions of elderly family members, seniors living alone, people with chronic illnesses, and those who are physically vulnerable, and to take appropriate precautions against the effects of hot weather, the statement said. The bureau also advised residents who need information about the shelter’s operation to call 2827 0939 during office hours or 6399 1963 outside office hours.

The observatory urged residents to take measures to protect vulnerable people from heat-related health risks.
