Macau is expected to experience very hot weather today, with the maximum temperature forecast to reach 33°C or above, while air quality is expected to be poor, according to a statement released by the Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) yesterday afternoon.
The local observatory issued a Yellow Hot Weather alert yesterday, advising the public to take precautions against heatstroke and drink water regularly, the statement said.
The Yellow alert is issued by the observatory when the weather is forecast to be “very hot.” It is activated when temperatures are expected to reach or exceed 33 degrees Celsius in certain areas. An Orange alert signifies “extremely hot” weather, typically issued when maximum temperatures are expected to surpass 34 or 35 degrees Celsius.
People engaging in outdoor activities are advised to wear loose, thin, and light-coloured clothing, avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight, and rest in shaded areas if they feel unwell, the statement noted, adding that air quality is expected to be poor today.
The observatory also urged people with existing heart or respiratory illnesses, pregnant women, children, and elderly people to minimise strenuous outdoor activities and reduce the time spent outdoors, particularly in areas with heavy traffic. The statement added that residents are advised to seek social welfare services if necessary.
The public, particularly vulnerable groups and those planning outdoor activities, are urged by the observatory to take precautions against both heat and poor air quality.
