The Judiciary Police (PJ) arrested a woman from the Chinese mainland for falsely accusing her “friend” of rape on Wednesday, PJ spokesman Cheong Un Hong said during a regular press conference on Friday.

Cheong identified the suspect as a 28-year-old online live streamer surnamed Zhang.

According to Cheong, on the evening of Wednesday, the Judiciary Police received a report from Zhang, who claimed that she had been raped in a hotel guestroom in Cotai. At the same time, the man involved reported to the Public Security Police Force (PSP) that he was being harassed by Zhang, Cheong said, adding that as the case was suspected to involve rape, it was transferred to the Judiciary Police for follow-up investigation.

According to Cheong, the investigation revealed that the two had met online over a month ago and had subsequently arranged to travel to Macau together where they had a meal last Monday.

On Tuesday afternoon, at the man’s invitation, Zhang stayed overnight in his rented hotel room. On Wednesday evening, Zhang reported that she had been subjected to non-consensual sexual intercourse at around 3 p.m. that day. Zhang said that she had remained in the man’s room until the evening, when she reported the matter to the Judiciary Police.

PJ officers discovered that after having sexual intercourse with the man, Zhang had demanded HK$20,000 (20,603 patacas) in casino chips from him, which he refused. This led to an argument, and both parties separately reported the matter to the police. According to a medical examination, no signs of sexual assault were found on the woman. The Judiciary Police suspect that Zhang, having failed to obtain the money, fabricated the rape allegation against the man.

Zhang has meanwhile been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a charge of making a false report.
