Integrated resort operator Sands China recently partnered with Macau Red Cross to promote the “Sands Cares Disaster Preparation & Emergency Response Kit Programme”, with Sands Cares Ambassador community volunteers assembling and distributing 1,500 emergency kits to four local schools as well as held related on-site workshops.
Marking eight years of collaboration, Sands China and Macau Red Cross have organised the kit programme since 2019 to local schools. The programme has been extended to local schools since 2024, according to a recent statement by the integrated resort operator, promoting “relevant knowledge and distributing emergency kits have been promoted to primary students through disaster preparation workshops, benefiting nearly 9,000 households to date”.
The kits were assembled at the Macau Red Cross headquarters, while the recent workshops at the four schools were held between June 17 and July 7, adding that since 2024, 19 schools have been covered in Areia Preta, Patane, Fai Chi Kei, Ilha Verde, Toi San, and Taipa, the statement said.
Meanwhile, the statement added that Sands China included a fire evacuation mask to this year’s kits. A First Aid and Disaster Preparation Workshop, along with the distribution of emergency kits to Sands China team members on property, was also featured in the programme for the first time this year.
Sands China Executive Vice Chairman Wilfred Wong Ying Wai was quoted by the statement as saying that the initiative “has demonstrated our company’s commitment to caring for and serving the community, and has brought together community forces to promote the spirit of mutual support and assistance. This year, not only have we optimised the emergency kits and supplemented them with additional disaster preparedness items, but we have also extended the disaster preparation workshops to our team members for the first time, further expanding the impact of the programme.”
Macau Red Cross deputy director of disaster relief affairs Owen Wong was quoted as saying that with Sands China, they have “consistently advanced community disaster preparation workshops and the emergency kit initiative, sharing emergency response and evacuation skills in low-lying areas, at schools, and with households”. He added that a fire prevention and response workshop was added to the existing workshop “in view of the severe fire incident in a neighbouring region” and “to strengthen the public’s ability to protect themselves in the event of a fire or smoke emergency”.
