The “3rd Research Symposium on Event Studies” was held at the Macao University of Tourism’s (UTM) Mong-Há Campus on Tuesday, with this edition focusing on the role of sporting events in communities.
The one-day symposium was organised by the university in conjunction with the School of Tourism Management at the Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) and was supported by the Event Management journal. Joining it were professors and doctoral students from both universities, along with industry speakers and scholars, according to a UTM statement that day.
The event featured three keynote speeches from representatives of both universities on sport topics, while four panel discussions on sport and communities, as well as community engagement through sporting events, were also held, the statement said, highlighting research and using examples from sporting events.
The statement quoted UTM Rector Fanny Vong Chuk Kwan as saying in her remarks: “We recognise the important contribution of sporting events to our life, and especially its instrumental role in building Macau into a World Centre for Tourism and Leisure”, while also highlighting the sports event sector as “an ecosystem that plays an important role in the community”.
The statement also quoted Chair Ubaldino Couto, who is also UTM’s Academic Coordinator for Tourism Event Management Programme, as saying: “The continued success and support on the symposium give us confidence to innovate and tap into other topics related to events”.
Academic Coordinator for Hotel Management Programme and Co-Chair Jenny Guan was also quoted as saying: “In the future, this symposium can explore along the nexus of events and luxury hospitality, as well as big health, finance and technology”.
