The Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) warned in a statement yesterday that Macau will experience even hotter weather over the coming days, while a developing low-pressure trough over the South China Sea could evolve into a tropical cyclone and bring heavy rain and thunderstorms this weekend.
According to the bureau, the recent period of heavy showers caused by a low-pressure trough is expected to ease as a subtropical high-pressure system strengthens over the region. More sunshine is forecast for the coming days, with daytime temperatures expected to reach at least 32 degrees Celsius across most parts of Macau and one to two degrees higher in urban areas, the statement said.
The bureau urged residents to take precautions against the heat by staying hydrated and avoiding prolonged outdoor activities. Looking ahead, the bureau noted that computer forecast models and AI models indicate that a low-pressure trough developing over the South China Sea in the coming days has the potential to intensify into a tropical cyclone.
Yesterday’s forecasts suggest the system could move towards western Guangdong and the northern South China Sea over the weekend, although its intensity and track remain uncertain as different forecasting models continue to show varying scenarios, the statement said.
Regardless of whether the system develops into a tropical cyclone, the observatory said its approach towards the southern China coast is expected to bring periods of heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong winds to Macau over the weekend, adding that it will continue monitoring the system’s development and advised residents to pay close attention to the latest weather forecasts and warning signals and adjust their travel plans accordingly.
