The Macau leg of the 18th China and Portuguese-speaking Countries Cultural Week opened yesterday in the city’s main square, Largo do Senado, with officials highlighting the city’s role as a platform for cultural exchange between China and Portuguese-speaking countries (PSCs).

Secretary for Economy and Finance Dora Ng Wai Han attended the opening ceremony, which marked the launch of the Macau programme under this year’s cultural week.

Addressing the opening ceremony, Secretary-General of the Permanent Secretariat of the Forum for Economic and Trade Co-operation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries (aka Forum Macao) Ji Xianzheng said that this year’s event continues the “three-city synergy” model introduced last year, with activities taking place in Macau, Qinghai and Beijing this time until July 10.

Ji thanked cultural organisations, performers and chefs from China and PSCs for supporting this year’s event, expressing hope that cooperation between China and PSCs would continue reaching new heights, while wishing participants good health, happiness and success.

Speaking to the media, deputy secretary-general of Forum Macao António Lei Chi Wai said that the cultural week aims to promote the cultures of China and PSCs through a wide range of activities, noting that the secretariat hopes to organise performance tours by artistic groups from Macau and the Chinese mainland to PSCs when conditions permit, further promoting cultural exchange and mutual learning.

Organised by Forum Macao, this year’s cultural week features cultural performances, exhibitions and other activities, with public broadcaster TDM serving as the media partner.

The opening ceremony featured song and dance performances by artistic groups and singers from Macau and eight PSCs, attracting a number of spectators to the square.
