A free-admission exhibition of historical photographs will kick off at the Archives of Macao this Friday, presenting the city’s historical footprints through images, according to a recent statement from the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC).
After Friday’s opening ceremony, the free-admission “City in Rephotography* – Exhibition of Historical Photographs from the Archives of Macao” will be on from Saturday through September 30, with the archives located at 91-93 Avenida do Conselheiro Ferreira de Almeida.
The statement said that it is among the activities held in celebration of the “China Cultural and Natural Heritage Day” and “International Archives Day”.
International Archives Day is annually celebrated on June 9. The Cultural and Natural Heritage Day is annually observed on the second Saturday of June, this year falling on June 13.
The contents that archive visitors will see include historical images chosen from its collection paired with contemporary photographs. Through this, the statement added that the exhibition aims to guide members of the public in appreciating “the urban transformations and cultural sentiments of Macau across time and space”.
One can visit the archives from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., being closed on Mondays and public holidays, the statement said.
*Rephotography is the act of taking a photograph of a specific site that has already been photographed in the past. It’s essentially a visual “then and now” comparison. The core goal is to stand in the exact same spot, use the same framing, and sometimes even replicate the original lighting or time of day to capture how a place has transformed over time.
