A raft of events is scheduled this month for “June, Month of Portugal”, with a total of 38 events in its programme, according to the Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) website.

Portugal annually celebrates its national day on June 10, with the MGTO website noting that it is officially known as “Day of Portugal, Camões, and the Portuguese Communities”.

Portuguese poet Luís de Camões passed away on June 10, 1579 or 1580. His date of birth is unknown.

The extensive programme features art exhibitions, workshops, gastronomy, and various celebrations, to name a few.

Several events in the programme took place in late May, while others are ongoing. These include FADO* À JANELA (“Fado at the Window”), which runs until June 10 (next Wednesday) at Casa de Portugal em Macau (CPM – “Portugal’s House in Macau”), and an event highlight titled Gastronomic Route – “Comer e Beber à Portuguesa”, or “Eating and Drinking in the Portuguese Style”, marking its fourth edition, which ends on June 30, with 35 participating restaurants offering discounts and themed menus.

Another highlight is Arraial de Santo António (“Saint Anthony’s Festival”) on June 13 and 14 at the Macau Portuguese School (EPM), with the event to feature concerts, food and activities, according to the event programme.

Meanwhile, an event that kicked off yesterday was a solo exhibition by local artist and curator Leong Kit Man titled “Ilha dos Amores” (“The Isle of Loves”) at Albergue SCM, showcasing a collection of Chinese paintings centred around Luís de Camões’ speculated sojourn in Macau and imagery from his epic poem Os Lusíadas (“The Lusiads” [“the Portuguese people”]). The exhibition is on until July 6th
