The three-day Macau Golf Masters was held from May 20 to 22 at the Macau International Golf Course, this year attracting over 200 participants from athletes to non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and corporate partners, and record community engagement.
The tournament is the “world’s largest and most prestigious inclusive golf tournament for athletes with intellectual and physical disabilities”, according to a statement on Sunday by organiser Charity Association of Macau Business Readers.
Having marked its 11th edition since its founding in 2012, it gathered 134 golfers from 23 countries and regions, among which were “65 athletes with intellectual and physical disabilities from 17 international delegations across Hong Kong, Macau, and the global community”. Five competitive formats were featured.
The statement said that the “Galaxy Entertainment Contender League” was won by Challenge Golf Costa Rica, followed by Thailand and Zimbabwe. Securing the top prize in the “MGM Challenger League” meanwhile was Australia’s Lachlan Pearson, followed by Max Walsh and Kang Sunggon, who are from New Zealand and South Korea respectively.
The inaugural IGT Nations Cup saw a mixed team representing Australia, Costa Rica, and Macau coming out on top, while the “Melco World League” saw Australia’s Steven Alderson emerging as champion in a close match with Zion Wagner and defending champion Lachlan Smith.
Lastly, Grand Masters Final presented by WE CAN DREAM TOGETHER FOUNDATION saw Team RoadHouse Macau, featuring Warren Clark, who is the Special Olympics Global Golf Ambassador from the United Kingdom, Lachlan Smith, and Costa Rican coaches Kenneth Brogdon and Jose Quesada, emerging as champions.
Moreover, highlighting the record local community participation, the statement said that over 100 youngsters from schools, associations and NGOs participated in golf workshops and introductory sessions led by Clark, supported by an international coaching team from Costa Rica, New Zealand, Hong Kong, and Macau.
