The public University of Macau’s (UM) Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) announced in a statement on Friday that it recently held a biomedical sciences symposium for students and early career researchers (ECRs)* as part of celebrations marking the university’s 45th anniversary.

According to the statement, the 10th Symposium on Biomedical Sciences for Students, Postdoctoral Fellows and Research Assistants, organised by the faculty, brought together members of the three groups to exchange ideas and present research findings.

Addressing the event, FHS Dean Deng Chuxia (aka Chuxia Deng) highlighted the faculty’s development over the past 13 years, noting its growth from a small academic team to a community of more than 50 faculty members and over 1,200 graduates, adding that the faculty has undertaken 370 research projects and published more than 2,800 academic papers, contributing to the university’s placement in the 151–175 band for life sciences and medical and health in global subject rankings, the statement noted.

Deng also revealed that preparations are underway to upgrade the faculty into a medical school, the statement said. He noted that the plan will focus on integrating basic and clinical medicine, optimising academic structures and strengthening the overall medical education and research ecosystem, the statement added.

The symposium featured eight oral presentations, with participants speaking about their latest research findings across a range of fields. Around 50 research posters were also presented, covering topics such as cancer and stem cells, genomics, bioinformatics, neuroscience, drug discovery, immunology and public health, according to the statement.

In his closing remarks, FHS Associate Dean Xu Renhe commended the success of the event and congratulated the eight winners of the oral and 20 recipients of the poster presentation on their awards, adding that the symposium provided a platform for participants to enhance their academic communication skills and broaden their research perspectives, the statement concluded.
