A launch ceremony and community walk for the “Citywide Weight Loss Challenge – The Power of Nutrition and Exercise” will take place on Saturday on the University of Macau (UM) campus in Hengqin, according to a statement by the Health Bureau (SSM) yesterday.

The event is organised by the Health Bureau in conjunction with the Sports Bureau (ID) and the public university, as part of the government’s efforts to promote healthier lifestyles among residents, the statement said.

The weight-loss challenge walk will be held from 2:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday in the square in front of the university’s Wu Yee Sun Library, the statement said, adding that participants will take part in a walk of around 2.5 kilometres around the campus.

According to the statement, those who complete the walk will receive a commemorative souvenir. Meanwhile, the statement said that health promotion booths will also be set up at the venue, offering a range of activities and consultations including traditional Chinese and Western medicine consultations, chronic disease screening, healthy diet guidance, infectious disease prevention information, smoking cessation and alcohol reduction advice, first-aid experience sessions, accident prevention tips and sporting instructions.

Residents, including the participants in the ongoing weight-loss challenge and their families are welcome to join the event, the statement said, noting that interested participants can register by scanning the QR code on the promotional poster.

The 90-day weight-loss challenge, organised by SSM, began at the end of last year and is still underway, the statement noted, adding that the initiative promotes a “sports and medicine integration” approach towards health management, aiming to combine physical exercise with medical guidance.

As part of the programme, participants can access various online and offline support services including weight management workshops, nutrition talks and professional consultations. In addition, the Sports Bureau will arrange fitness instructors at four “Sports Health Consultation Stations” activities between March and April to provide professional exercise guidance to participants.

Further details about the programme and related activities are available on the SSM website at https://www.ssm.gov.mo/weightloss
