In order to foster integration between the Chinese and Portugues cultures and strengthen mutual friendship, the third “Chinese-Portuguese Cultural Interaction Activity” was held yesterday.

The one-day event, themed Chinese-Portuguese cultural exchange, which took place at the Taipa Houses, featured a traditional costume experience area, Chinese and Portuguese craft & arts display and various performances such as a children’s fashion show with Chinese and Portuguese attire.

Lau Kam Ling, president of the preparatory committee of women in the business and industry sector in Macau for the commemoration of International Women’s Day, told reporters on the sidelines of the event that this year’s exchange activity was held at the Taipa Houses with the aim of attracting more tourists and residents to participate in and experience the two countries’ distinct cultures.

Lau underscored that the core objective of the event was to implement Macau’s development initiative of “One Centre, One Platform, One Base,” emphasising Macau’s unique role as a hub for exchanges between China and Portuguese-speaking countries (PSCs). She also noted the leadership role of women’s groups in the effort.

Lau added that her organisation has been arranging exchange programmes and trips for women from Macau’s industrial and commercial circles to the Chinese mainland, with the aim of facilitating business exchanges and visits to help them integrate into the nation’s broader development, strengthen unity among women in the industrial and commercial sectors and continue to focus on issues related to women’s rights.

Lau noted in a speech that Macau successfully established a China and Portuguese- and Spanish-speaking Countries Economic and Trade Service Centre last year, and was named the “Best Asian Conference City” and “Best Convention Business City” for the third consecutive year. She said that these achievements underscore Macau’s vital role as a “connector” between China and PSCs and as a gateway for international exchange.
