The Macao Chinese Orchestra (OCHM) is slated to present the wind and percussion concert “Strike · Breath” on Friday at the Macau Cultural Centre’s (CCM) Small Auditorium, aiming to highlight the distinctive soundscape of Chinese wind and percussion music, according to a statement by Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) yesterday.
The statement said that the concert will begin at 7:45 p.m. and feature the orchestra’s Music Director and Principal Conductor Zhang Lie, alongside flautist Zhang Weiliang as artistic director, the statement noted.
Zhang Weiliang, a prominent figure in music performance, composition and education, is known as a pioneer of “new folk music”, according to the statement. He has performed the soundtracks of acclaimed films such as “Farewell My Concubine”, “Ju Dou” and “Raise the Red Lantern”, the statement said, adding that in this concert, he will introduce the musical pieces to the audience and perform a repertoire of traditional folk songs and rearranged modern pieces, including the local premieres of “Hanging up Red Lanterns”, “Lantern Festivals”, “Farewell”, “Weeping Flower” and “Congratulations”.
The wind and percussion sections will jointly present “The Yellow River Descends from Heaven”, composed by Zhang Lie, according to the statement.
In addition, suona* soloist Tian Ding will perform his original work “At Sunrise” with the orchestra, the statement noted, adding that the carefully curated repertoire aims to demonstrate the expressive lyricism of wind instruments alongside the dynamic resonance of percussion, creating a dialogue between the two sections.
The concert forms part of the orchestra’s 2025–26 concert season, the statement said, adding that the performance will last approximately one hour and 30 minutes, including an interval.
Tickets priced at 150 and 200 patacas are available through the Macau Ticketing Network, with enquiries via the 24-hour hotline 2855 5555 or online at www.macauticket.com.
