Aiming to make good use of green resources, the Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) will distribute post-Chinese New Year (CNY) decorative flowers to the public free of charge at two locations today, the bureau said in a statement yesterday.

The statement noted that that distribution will start at 11 a.m. in the peninsula’s Iao Hon Market Garden and at 3 p.m. in Flower City Garden in Taipa, with the objective to extend the plants’ life and promote awareness of a green living environment. All plants will be available on a first-come, first-served basis while stocks last.

The plants to be distributed are Ixora chinensis (Chinese Ixora)*, the statement added.

Customarily, the bureau displays various types of festive flora alongside streets and alleys during public holidays and significant occasions to beautify the city and enhance residents’ quality of life, the statement said, adding that after the festivities, some of the decorative plants are recovered and replanted. Withered or non-replantable plants are sent to local composting facilities for processing, returning to nature, the bureau said.

Additionally, depending on their condition, some plants are given to the public free of charge, the statement added.

The bureau reminded the public in the statement that all distributed flowers and plants are intended for ornamental purposes only and should not be consumed. For enquiries, please contact the IAM service hotline on 2833 7676.
