The private Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) said in a statement yesterday that its Agricultural Sciences discipline has entered the ESI global top 1 percent for the first time, following ten other disciplines already ranked.

The Essential Science Indicators (ESI) data was released by Clarivate, a global information services and analytics company that focuses on providing insights and analytics to the research and academic sectors, AI chatbot Poe notes.

ESI is a recognised tool for scientific research statistical analysis based on the Web of Science Core Collection. It includes 22 disciplines and over 12,000 important academic journals globally, the statement said. ESI helps assess the “international academic level and influence” of universities, research institutions, and countries/regions, the statement noted, adding: “Only disciplines whose total citation frequency of papers published in the past decade ranks among the global top 1% can be included in the list”.

MUST’s 10 other disciplines previously ranked are Engineering, Computer Science, Pharmacology & Toxicology, Social Sciences (General), Clinical Medicine, Molecular Biology & Genetics, Biology & Biochemistry, Chemistry, Materials Science, and Environment/Ecology.

This achievement highlights MUST’s growing recognition in agricultural research, the statement said. Moreover, the statement also highlighted: “The interdisciplinary development of Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, Pharmacy, Environmental Science, and other disciplines has played a key supporting role in enabling Agricultural Sciences to enter the ESI global top 1%”.
