The Public Security Police (PSP) arrested a man from the Chinese mainland on Saturday for stealing 8,800 yuan (10,100 patacas) from a mainland woman, PSP spokeswoman Lai In Hong said during a regular press conference yesterday.

Lai identified the suspect as an installation worker in his forties surnamed Song.

According to Lai, the police received a report on December 15 from a woman from the Chinese mainland who said that she had met Song online in October via a mobile dating platform. They arranged to travel to Macau together and checked into a hotel guestroom registered in Song’s name on December 13. On the morning of December 15, Song claimed that he was going out for breakfast alone and left the room. When the victim tried to contact Song afterwards, she discovered that she had been blocked. Upon checking her belongings, she discovered that 8,800 yuan in cash, which had been in her handbag, had vanished. Suspecting that Song had stolen the money, she immediately reported the case to the police.

Through their citywide CCTV surveillance and hotel footage, the police identified Song as the suspect and apprehended him on Saturday at the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Macao Port checkpoint. Under questioning, Song denied the crime.

Song has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a theft charge.
