Macau logs daily record of 866,603 border crossings on New Year’s Day

     Macau set a new record of 866,603 border exits and entries yesterday, New Year’s Day, nearly half of whom were visitors, the Public Security Police (PSP) announced today. 

According to PSP data, one-third of the New Year’s Day border crossers were residents, 49.6 percent were visitors, and 16.2 percent were non-resident workers (NRWs). While the number of New Year’s Day entries stood at 415,687, the number of exits amounted to 450,916. 

A total of 188,036 visitor arrivals were recorded yesterday, the highest number ever recorded on a New Year’s Day. The joint Macau-Hengqin border checkpoint set a daily record of 147,259 border crossers on New Year’s Day. 

On New Year’s Eve, the special administrative region's number of border crossings stood at 760,363. Among Macau's nine border checkpoints, the Barrier Gate is the busiest. 

The Public Security Police includes Macau’s Immigration Department. According to tourism sector estimates, Macau recorded about 39.7 million visitor arrivals last year, beating the previous record of 39.4 million visitor arrivals in 2019.

At the end of the third quarter of last year, according to the latest demographics, Macau’s population stood at 686,600.
