The theatre dance “Selfish Selfie”, directed by Alexis Kam (金曉霖), will be staged from Friday to Sunday at the Macau Cultural Centre’s (CCM) Black Box II, blending artificial intelligence (AI) technology with live performance to explore identity, illusion, and authenticity in the digital age.

Part of the “Commissioning Performing Arts Productions 2024–2026” programme, “Selfish Selfie” marks Kam’s third collaboration with artificial-intelligence (AI) artist and designer Dynamic Wang (汪圓清), following their works “Good! Girl!” (2023) and “Infinite Jest” (2024).

The production combines dance, theatre, and multimedia elements, aiming to invite audiences to become active participants rather than passive spectators, according to a press conference yesterday.

The presser was attended by Kam, Wang, performers Anna Ieong (楊螢映) and Lao Pui Lon, as well as producer Erik Kuong Wa Fun.

During yesterday’s press conference, Kam said that the performance aims to examine how truth and illusion coexist in an era saturated with digital self-representation. “We invite audiences to have fun and immerse themselves in this fleeting theatrical moment – a journey through illusion and wonder,” she said.

According to a statement provided by the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) yesterday, the performance is supported by a creative team including Wang, dramaturge* Tang Fu Kuen, music designer Liu Yiwei, and scenographer Gabriel Fung Kwok Kee. The performance uses projection, lighting, and AI-generated visuals to question how technology shapes human perception and the sense of self.

The performance is mainly in Cantonese with occasional dialogue in Putonghua and English.

“Selfish Selfie” starts at 7:45 p.m. on Friday and at 2:45 p.m. and 7:45 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.Tickets, which cost 280 patacas, can be bought from ticketing.enjoymacao.mo, www.damai.cn, and show.maoyan.com
