The Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) received a report from Kao Yip Middle School on Avenida Xian Xing Hai in Nape on Wednesday that food in the lunch boxes provided by a designated food supplier was found to have “abnormalities”, according to an IAM statement yesterday.
The Municipal Affairs Bureau dispatched its officials to the school and notified the Health Bureau (SSM) and the Education and Youth Affairs Bureau (DSEJ) about the incident, the statement said, adding that the food supplier concerned was being investigated, while food samples were collected for testing, which was still ongoing yesterday.
Moreover, the Municipal Affairs Bureau received further reports from parents yesterday, indicating that some of the students from the same school had experienced physical discomfort after consuming the food provided the previous day.
As a precautionary measure, the supplier has been ordered to suspend the provision of hot meals containing the suspect ingredients, the statement said.
The Health Bureau is conducting an epidemiological* investigation, the statement said, adding that preliminary information suggested that the affected students had all consumed the school-provided lunches.
The statement pointed out that as a potential link to food safety issues cannot be ruled out, legal action would be initiated if violations of the local Food Safety Law are identified in the meal provision process.
The statement added that the Municipal Affairs Bureau will stay in touch with the Health Bureau, the Education and Youth Affairs Bureau and the school to continuously monitor the situation. It urged students and staff who consumed the problematic food and are still experiencing any discomfort to seek medical attention as soon as possible.
