Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) President Deland Leong Wai Man told reporters yesterday that her bureau will host a five-month-long Chinese cultural promotion event between next month and next March.

Leong made the remarks at a press briefing after a meeting of the Cultural Development Committee at the Macau Cultural Centre (CCM) in Nape.

The Chinese name of the event “中華文化演出季”, translated through DeepSeek, is “Chinese Cultural Performance Season.”

According to committee member Lok Hei, the event will feature “national-level refined” performances, such as Peking Opera pieces “Borrow the East Wind”, “The Huarong Trail,” and “The Legend of the White Snake.”

The event will also include immersive dramas popular both at home and overseas, like “Farewell My Concubine,” and dance dramas such as “Hua Mulan,” Lok said.

Leong said she hoped that both local residents and tourists could experience the excellence of traditional Chinese culture through these performances in Macau, in conjunction with a series of exchange activities.

Leong underlined that the event aims to establish the programme as a new cultural IP event and also to better leverage Macau’s cultural role.

Furthermore, Leong said that the event will be held with the aim of extending these exchange activities into local communities and schools, promoting the heritage of Chinese culture and fostering innovative development in Macau’s education system.

More details about the events will be officially released later, Leong said.

Lok told the post-meeting press briefing that some committee members pointed out during yesterday’s closed-door meeting that while senior residents are more familiar with traditional classic literary works and theatrical pieces, efforts to broaden the programme’s impact should focus on enhancing promotional and explanatory efforts targeted at younger generations and teenagers.

Lok said that the members suggested that during exchange events or before performances, introductions to the story background and literary creation should be provided to the audiences to heighten appreciation for Chinese culture and foster a sense of responsibility for inheriting Chinese culture among the participants and viewers, Lok said.

Lok also said that some members of the committee suggested during yesterday’s meeting to leverage the opportunity of having numerous art troupes performing in Macau to organise masterclasses and workshops that would facilitate in-depth exchanges between local professional and amateur art groups and the visiting art troupes, thereby extending the practical impact of the event, Lok said.
