POLY MGM MUSEUM’s newest exhibition “Silk Roads Beyond Borders” launched on October 1, National Day, with over 200 artefacts on show until August 2026.

Continuing its blend of cultural heritage and state of the art technology, as well as its focus on cultural relics and artworks from Belt and Road (B&R) countries and regions, the exhibition is “anchored in the cultural heritage of the Belt and Road and framed by the intangible cultural legacies of East and West”, according to a statement provided at yesterday’s media tour.

Its latest exhibits are presented across four chapters, namely “Through Sand and Wind”, “Gilded Threads”, “The Golden Bough”, and “Road to the Future”, enabling museumgoers to explore historic artefacts alongside digital exhibitions and some contemporary works throughout the dynamic venue.

The exhibits are from the collections of close to 20 leading domestic cultural institutions in the Chinese mainland including the Palace Museum and the National Museum of China, as well as those from overseas institutions like the National Museum of Damascus in Syria and the Hirayama Ikuo Silk Road Museum in Japan. The statement highlighted that future additions from Portugal and France, among others, are also being planned.

Moreover, a key highlight of the exhibition is the Dunhuang civilisation*, according to the MGM statement, showcasing works from scholars like Chang Shuhong and Chang Shana, while ancient Silk Road instruments reconstructed by conductor-composer Tan Dun are also showcased.

Over 900,000 guests have visited POLY MGM MUSEUM

Over 900,000 guests have visited Poly MGM MUSEUM since opening in November last year, a record that the integrated resort operator is proud to achieve, MGM Arts and Culture Senior Vice President Cristina Kuok Wai Sum said in response to a question by the Post during an interview with English-language media yesterday.

Kuok added that the company is continuing its work towards finding creative ways to attract more museumgoers, wanting them to visit and even join activities like workshops.

Moreover, with the museum featuring interactive display cases, Kuok told the Post that this is an element that helps “enrich the whole experience in the museum”, aid many younger visitors to understand exhibits through interaction, as well as in telling the stories behind each piece in addition to their trained docents. Kuok added that the museum works with experts researching each item in creating interesting experiences.

Beyond the fun in interacting with the relics this way, Kuok highlighted that this creates “edutainment”, wherein education and entertainment are both very significant. And allowing visitors to take away something from the experience, Kuok noted, is important. “At least they take away a memory, but they also take away a fun learning experience”, Kuok said.

POLY MGM MUSEUM is located on Level 2 of MGM MACAU in Nape. Online reservations are available online at https://museum.mgm.mo/en/ Guide tours are offered in Cantonese and Putonghua daily at 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. respectively.
