The Macau Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) announced on its website yesterday afternoon that Standby Signal No.1 might be hoisted between tonight and early tomorrow when a tropical cyclone is forecast to arrive within 800 kilometres from Macau.
Signal No.1 is the lowest of Macau’s five-level tropical cyclone warning signals. It is hoisted when a tropical cyclone comes within 800 kilometres from Macau. Its higher warning typhoon signals are the No.3, No.8, No.9, and No.10.
The observatory said that a low-pressure area at the east of the Philippines has developed into a tropical depression, forecasting that the tropical depression was expected to enter within 800 kilometres of Macau between tonight and early tomorrow.
The weather station said that the cyclone was expected to gradually intensify these two days, moving towards the eastern coast of Guangdong.
However, the bureau said there was still large uncertainty of the cyclone’s path, adding that it was still closely monitoring its development and movement.
