In preparation for November’s National Games, the Post visited the Athlete Training and Development Centre in Cotai on July 31 to have a look at the readiness of the local Volleyball Women’s Team.
The Volleyball Association of Macao’s senior women’s team coach Cheong Ka Chon told the Post that the squad was selected from the members of local Division A and youth teams, pointing out that of the team’s challenges that some key players are studying outside Macau and that it has a rather “youthful” lineup.
While acknowledging gaps in physique and skills compared to professional teams, he said that significant progress had been made through intensified fitness training and tactical drills.
Cheong also said that the National Games will serve as a pivotal growth opportunity for the team, prioritising pressure resilience and teamwork. Cheong said that “We’re not chasing podium finishes, but we are aiming to showcase homegrown players’ tenacity. We want fans to witness our evolution – every dive and spike lays the groundwork for future tournaments,” he said.
Opposite hitter Ian U In, a 12-year volleyball veteran, said that she’s been juggling leagues in Macau and Hong Kong to prepare for the National Games. While acknowledging the physical disparity with professional athletes, the defensive specialist said she aims to close the gap through intensified backcourt drills.
Ian said, “Competing on home soil means everything,” adding that she hopes for strong local support. She particularly values the chance to face Hong Kong’s elite players, “We’ll maximise every play to show our progress however limited the conditions are,” she said.
The upcoming 15th National Games will be held in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau from November 9 to 21. The Macau competition zone will host five events: table tennis, 3x3 basketball, 5x5 basketball (men’s U18), volleyball (women’s senior), and karate, while the NGD and NSOG will both hold the badminton competitions here.
The volleyball (women’s senior) competition will be held from November 7 to 19 in the Venetian Arena and Macau East Asian Games Dome in Macau.
