A young local woman has fallen victim to a “fake police” scam, losing one million patacas, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Cheong Kim Fong said during a regular press conference yesterday.

According to Cheong, the local woman received a call on Thursday morning from someone speaking Putonghua, who claimed to be a “mainland police officer.” The caller accused her of sending numerous scam messages from her mainland-registered phone number. Following the caller’s instructions, she participated in a video call and enabled screen sharing while logged into her online banking account. The victim was also told not to disclose any details to others and was ordered to turn off bank SMS notifications.

It was only after she received a call from her bank on Friday afternoon that she finally realised she had been scammed and immediately reported a loss of one million patacas to the police.
