Tropical Cyclone “Wipha”, currently located near Luzon in the Philippines, is expected to enter within 800 km of Macau by early tomorrow, the Macau Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) has announced this afternoon.
The bureau said it will issue Tropical Cyclone Standby Signal No. 1 accordingly.
Due to the cyclone's broad circulation and continued intensification, there is a high probability that Storm Warning Signal No. 3 will be issued later tomorrow, the statement said.
On Sunday, the local observatory said, “Wipha” may move closer to the Pearl River Delta, potentially passing within 80 kilometers of Macau, with its most significant impact expected then. The bureau "will assess the need to issue higher-level tropical cyclone signals and storm surge warnings based on the storm’s proximity to the Pearl River Delta and changes in intensity." the statement said.
Under the cyclone's influence, showers and winds are expected to intensify late tomorrow, the bureau said, adding that unsettled weather is expected on Sunday, with strong winds, heavy showers, and thunderstorms. Due to the combined effects of storm surge and heavy rainfall, low-lying areas - particularly the Inner Harbour area - may experience flooding, the bureau warned.
"As the cyclone’s track and intensity remain uncertain, the public should stay updated with the latest weather advisories and take precautions against strong winds and potential flooding," the statement said.
