Sands China said in a statement on Friday that its International Film Camp (IFC) will take place on its premises from September 11 to 15, with applications open until July 20 with this year featuring veteran Hong Kong filmmaker John Chong Ching (莊澄) as chief mentor.
The camp was announced by the Asian Film Awards Academy, which hosts the camp, in a press conference in Hong Kong, with Sands China as one of its sponsors, supporting the event for the second consecutive year.
During the camp, Friday’s statement said, young filmmakers from Macau, Hong Kong and other Asian regions will have a chance to “exchange ideas and equip themselves with the knowledge and skills needed to create feature-length works and develop careers in the film industry”.
Camp applicants will undergo a selection process. According to the statement, they will be asked to submit a script themed “My Best Friend”, with invited chief mentor Chong, who has made over a hundred films, leading judges to review, evaluate, and conduct interviews to select this year’s 16 finalists to attend the camp.
The statement said that camp participants will receive one-on-one mentoring with well-established industry professionals and attend masterclasses and panel discussions, as well as pitch their final project for a chance to be one of eight winners to each receive HK$300,000 in funding to create their short film and screening opportunities at international film festivals.
Asian Film Awards Academy Chairman Wilfred Wong Ying-wai said in the statement: “I believe that participants can inspire each other with creativity through their journey in Macau – a place where diverse cultures converge.”
Sands China Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director Grant Chum Kwan Lock was quoted by the statement as saying: “Through cooperation with the Asian Film Awards Academy, we support the camp being held in Macau, leveraging Hong Kong’s internationally renowned film industry and the strong foundation and strength of film talent to help appropriately diversify Macau’s economy and provide fertile ground for the development of Macau’s film industry.”
Last year’s film camp drew over 500 applicants from across Asia. Among last year’s eight project winners, two Hong Kong productions made their world premieres in April at the 27th Far East Film Festival in Udine, Italy.
