The local government has set up a new working group aiming to “fully” ensure the protection of local residents’ employment.

The setting-up of the working group was announced in a statement by the Office of Secretary for Economy and Finance Anton Tai Kin Ip on Wednesday last week.

The statement said that Chief Executive Sam Hou Fai decided on Wednesday last week to set up the new working group with the aim of “ensuring the implementation of the local government’s people-centred governance philosophy”.

The statement said that the cross-departmental working group, which is chaired by Tai, aims to advance the employment of local residents in the city.

According to the statement, the working group is tasked with carrying out scientific assessments of the city’s human resource trends, collecting and studying data concerning the supply and demand of the local labour market in various sectors with the aim of coming up with appropriate policies and measures to promote local residents’ employment, and regularly monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of the government’s various policies and measures promoting local residents’ employment.

The working group includes officials from Tai’s office, the Office of Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture Wallis O Lam, the office of Secretary for Transport and Public Works Raymond Tam Vai Man, and the Labour Affairs Bureau.

According to data released by the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) last week, Macau’s general unemployment rate (1.9 percent) and local residents’ unemployment rate (2.5 percent) for February – April remained the same as in the previous period (January – March).

The general unemployment rate comprises local residents and non-resident workers.
