The Paris-based Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) has announced in a recent statement that the 72nd Macau Grand Prix (MGP) in November will feature the inaugural Formula 4 World Cup among its races.
The announcement, according to the statement, comes after the World Motor Sport Council gave its approval by e-vote for the creation of the Formula 4 World Cup.
The statement pointed out that education is the “guiding principle” behind the race’s creation, adding: “With track time limited and fewer street circuits available to them [F4 racers] at national and regional level, the event will give young drivers an extra opportunity to come and compete on the Guia Circuit”.
It is set to feature a “rigorous driver selection process” in choosing competing young racers, the statement added.
FIA Single-Seater Committee President Emanuele Pirro highlighted in the statement that Macau is an “essential part of the education of a young driver”. He was quoted by the statement as saying that the Formula 4 World Cup will “give the best drivers coming from the national level an opportunity to learn what it takes to drive the Guia Circuit in an F4 car, which is a bit more forgiving than an FR* car, so that when they come back in one or two years for the FR World Cup, they are ready to really show what they can do”.
Automobile General Association Macao-China (AAMC) Chairman Chong Coc Veng noted that the F4 World Cup is “an opportunity for young drivers in the region to look for their development pathway from international karting events to single-seater F4 and FR, and become world champions in the future.”
The 72nd Macau Grand Prix is slated to take place from November 13 to 16, gathering racers from around the world to compete at the bendy 6.12 kilometre Guia Circuit.
The addition of the Formula 4 World Cup brings the FIA competitions in the Macau race weekend to four with the return of the FIA FR World Cup, which debuted last year, and the GT World Cup as well as the TCR World Tour, according to the statement.
