MGM COTAI saw an afternoon of performances, Bavarian delicacies, and German beer – Paulaner, along with non-alcoholic options, as it held the opening ceremony of the 16th edition of the Oktoberfest at MGM Macau, with the event running until November 8.
Held on the integrated resort’s Roof Terrace, which is decorated with the Bavarian themes associated with the festival, yesterday’s opening event also saw performances by this year’s invited band SAKRISCH GUAT (“Darned Good” in Bavarian), marking the group’s debut in Macau. They performed popular Western hits, traditional Bavarian songs, along with both Chinese and Cantonese hits. Not missing was the festival’s theme song “Nei Hou, Macau!”.
The performances were also accompanied by performers clad in dirndls, a traditional German and Alpine dress featuring a fitted bodice, a low-cut white blouse, a full skirt, and a front apron. They are, according to Gemini, a quintessential outfit worn during the Oktoberfest.
Among yesterday’s attending guests were Oliver Bräuner, Deputy Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Hong Kong, and Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) Director Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes.
Addressing yesterday’s ceremony, MGM China Holdings Limited Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director Kenneth Feng Xiaofeng pointed out that the event has become a signature annual celebration, bringing people together through food, music and shared experiences.
He added that by combining Bavarian traditions with new elements, this year’s festival continues to showcase Macau’s vibrant and multicultural spirit
This year’s Oktoberfest features several new highlights. Besides the new band, it also features the “Cantopop DJ Nights”, featuring two performances by popular Cantopop DJ collective Cantomania this Friday and Saturday.
To date, the integrated resort operator said in a statement yesterday that the festival has drawn over 200,000 attendees over the years.
