The 5th edition of the annual “Rummikub Competition” was hosted at the Macau Fisherman’s Wharf Convention and Exhibition Centre on Sunday, this year gathering 78 teams from 48 schools in the “School Group”, while the “Open Group” drew more than 800 individual sign-ups, power utility CEM said in a statement.
The event saw a record high of 1,100 participants spanning those aged six to 97 years old, the statement said, adding that the competition tables were meanwhile expanded from 40 to 44, with a total of 352 contestants selected for both groups by lucky draw.
Among the two categories, Kuok Ngan Kei, a Form 6 student from Fong Chong School in Taipa, was crowned champion, receiving a cash prize of 2,000 patacas and a trophy in the “Student Group”, while the “Open Group” was won by Ho Hang Sam, taking home 3,000 patacas and a trophy. Each category also had cash prizes and trophies for their second, third and fourth place winners, along with “Merit Award” and the “Most Games Won Award” recipients, as noted in the statement.
The recent event was organised by power utility CEM in conjunction with the Macao Federation of Trade Unions, commonly known as Gung Luen, and the Macao Volunteers Association. The venue also featured charity sale and fundraising zones, with registration fees and proceeds donated to this year’s beneficiary “Cradle of Hope Association”, which the statement said is dedicated to providing safe and welcoming residential care and daily life support for children and adolescents from birth to eighteen who are unable to grow up in their biological families due to family crises.
CEM’s Regulatory Affairs and Corporate Communications Office Director Cecília Nip Lai Peng said, as summarised in the statement, that it was inspiring to see residents of different generations and backgrounds form connections through Rummikub, adding that, moving forward, “CEM will continue working alongside all sectors of society to host diverse, meaningful initiatives that build a better, more cohesive Macau community”.
Cradle of Hope Association representative Leong Soi Chi pointed out, as summarised in the statement, that the “significance of this competition goes far beyond the funds raised; more importantly, it conveys the care of enterprises and the general public for vulnerable youth, using warm, practical actions to guide the children to thrive and grow”.
