The General Administration of Customs of the People’s Republic of China (GACC) announced in a statement yesterday that Zhuhai’s Gongbei Customs officers seized 20 kg of silver granules from the tyre of an e-scooter at Gongbei Port (checkpoint) last Tuesday.
In the statement, GACC identified the smuggler as a male traveller from Hong Kong surnamed Wong.
According to the statement, on that day, Wong, riding an electric scooter, entered the mainland through the checkpoint’s “green channel” in the passenger inspection hall.
Customs officers noticed that he appeared nervous and that his scooter was moving unusually slowly, so they stopped him for inspection, the statement said, adding that upon further examination, officers discovered 16 packets of silver granules, totalling 20 kg, wrapped in black rubber sheeting and concealed inside the scooter’s rear tyre.
In the statement, the GACC reminded the public that concealing goods to evade duties constitutes smuggling. Under Chinese mainland regulations, individuals found guilty of such acts face strict penalties, and serious cases will result in criminal prosecution.
