The Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) has announced in a statement that it has been listed among the world’s top 10 institutions by Nature Index 2025 for space sciences.

According to the statement issued by the Taipa-based private higher education institution, the latest rankings in space sciences, released by the internationally renowned research evaluation database Nature Index, show that MUST ranks eighth in the world. This places it among the global top ten alongside world-leading institutions such as the University of California, Berkeley, and Johns Hopkins University.

Space science, the statement said, is the scientific field that studies outer space beyond the Earth’s atmosphere and the phenomena of celestial bodies, encompassing sub-disciplines such as solar physics, space weather, celestial dynamics, and planetary science.

Analysis of research outputs in space sciences by the Nature Index shows that the field is undergoing explosive growth – between 2023 and 2025, the number of related papers increased by more than 150 percent, the statement said.

In this frontier discipline, MUST underlined that through sustained research investment and high-quality output in recent years, it has successfully joined the ranks of the world’s top institutions.

In this top 10 ranking, the statement noted, US institutions occupy five places and Chinese institutions four, with MUST among them, as well as an Indian institution. Its core supporting platform is the university’s State Key Laboratory of Lunar and Planetary Sciences, which is the first State Key Laboratory in the field of astronomy and planetary science in China, the statement said.

The laboratory focuses on three frontier directions: planetary environments and habitability, planetary formation and evolution, and space/space exploration.

Over the past five years, the team has published more than 900 research papers in total, the statement noted.

The Nature Index is an open database compiled by Nature Research Intelligence, part of Springer Nature. It tracks the research paper contributions of institutions and countries in high-quality journals across the natural sciences, health sciences, applied sciences, and social sciences, according to the statement.

Headquartered in the German capital Berlin, Springer Nature is a major global academic publishing company. It is one of the world’s largest publishers of scientific, technical, medical (STM), humanities, and social science research literature.

The journals included in the Nature Index are selected by independent researchers based on academic reputation and cover top-tier journals across multiple disciplines, the statement said, adding that the index is intended to reflect global high-quality research output and collaboration dynamics.
