Aiming to promote the proper handling of waste cooking oil and enhance restaurant operators’ awareness of protecting the public drainage network, the Public Works Bureau (DSOP) and the Environmental Protection Bureau (DSPA) announced in a joint statement yesterday that they recently introduced newly implemented temporary waste cooking oil collection measures for the catering businesses in the areas of Rua de Camilo Pessanha (庇山耶街) and Travessa dos Becos (吉慶里).

The bureaux urged the catering sector to fulfil their responsibility in maintaining grease traps and properly disposing of waste cooking oil to ensure smooth public drainage. Officials from the bureaux distributed promotional leaflets to business owners and staff members of local catering businesses, recommending the installation of grease interceptors while explaining key precautions regarding installation and maintenance, according to the statement.

The statement noted that the bureaux also introduced the operation of two newly established temporary waste cooking oil collection facilities on Rua das Estalagens (草堆街) and Rua de Camilo Pessanha (庇山耶街), encouraging nearby catering businesses to actively utilise these services.

Meanwhile, local recyclers in Macau are currently engaged in collecting waste cooking oil to convert it into green fuel oil, the statement said, adding that the bureaux advised catering businesses to hand over their waste cooking oil to qualified recyclers to achieve resource recycling. Further details are available on the dedicated page of the Environmental Protection Bureau’s website (https://www.dspa.gov.mo/recycle_list.aspx).

Both bureaux underscored that the catering industry should properly process waste cooking oil and perform regular maintenance and inspections of grease traps to ensure proper filtration.
