The Judiciary Police (PJ) arrested a young local couple on Tuesday in connection with a drug case after finding an ecstasy tablet and drug-related paraphernalia at their home, spokesman Ho Ka Weng said during a regular press conference yesterday.
Ho identified the suspects as a 24-year-old man surnamed Mok, who claimed to work in the F&B sector, and his 26-year-old girlfriend, surnamed Wong, who claimed to be jobless.
According to Ho, police were investigating a separate drug trafficking case when they discovered the male’s suspected involvement. Officers visited him and his girlfriend at a flat in the northern district at about 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday.
During a search of the flat, police found an ecstasy tablet with an estimated street value of about 200 patacas, alongside transparent plastic bags, a straw, and banknotes bearing suspected drug residue.
Ho said the investigation indicated that both suspects had a habit of taking drugs, adding that the man had provided drugs to his girlfriend free of charge.
Urine tests showed that the woman tested positive for drugs, while the man tested negative, Ho added.
Both suspects are facing charges of drug-taking and possession of drug taking paraphernalia, while Mok faces an additional charge of drug trafficking.
The couple have been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) for further investigation.
Ho noted that the investigation is continuing to trace the source of the drugs.
According to Law No 17/2009, Wong and Mok face up to one and five years behind bars, respectively.
