The Public Security Police Force (PSP) apprehended a local man last Wednesday for driving under the influence of alcohol, making three wrong-way driving manoeuvres before crashing into a bus and fleeing the scene, PSP spokesman Sou Tak Sen said during a regular press conference yesterday.

Sou identified the suspect as an insurance agent in his 30s surnamed Chio.

According to Sou, PSP officers received a report at about 12:20 a.m. last Wednesday that a private car had collided with a bus in Avenida do Dr. Rodrigo Rodrigues (羅理基博士大馬路). The bus was preparing to leave a bus stop when the private car struck its right side, causing a female passenger to fall and sustain minor injuries.

The driver of the private car failed to stop and drove away from the scene. Police subsequently traced the vehicle through their surveillance system and intercepted Chio in the Rua de Pequim area in Zape.

Officers noticed that Chio smelled strongly of alcohol. A breathalyser test showed that his blood alcohol concentration was 2.1 grams per litre, indicating that he had been driving under the influence of alcohol.

Further investigation and a review of surveillance footage revealed that Chio had driven in the wrong direction three times in the Nape area before the collision.

The injured passenger was a local woman in her 50s who suffered minor injuries to her waist; she was not in serious condition after receiving initial treatment.

Chio has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing charges of drunk driving, dangerous driving, negligent bodily harm, and evading responsibility.
