The Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) announced in a statement yesterday that a female Francois’ langur (黑叶猴; “black leaf monkey”)* in Seac Pai Van Park is unwell, and the public display of her has been suspended.

According to the statement, the primate recently showed signs of decreased appetite and reduced activity.

Following an examination by veterinary staff, the animal was provisionally diagnosed with a respiratory and urinary tract infection, and is taking prescribed medication under an active treatment plan, the bureau said.

To provide a quiet, comfortable environment for recovery and allow closer monitoring by the care team, the monkey has been temporarily moved to the veterinary enclosure and removed from public view.

The bureau noted that the species is listed as endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List and is a national Grade I key protected wild animal in China.

The female langur is around 22 years old, which is equivalent to over 80 years in human age, the bureau said. She was born in Flora Park in 2004, relocated to the Primate Pavilion at Seac Pai Van Park following its opening in 2014, and moved to the park’s Pavilion of Rare Animals in 2025.
