A 73-year-old local man suffering from chronic diseases is in a critical condition after being infected with influenza A, the Health Bureau (SSM) has announced.
According to an SSM statement on Monday night, the man came down with a fever, cough, runny nose, and muscle pain on Sunday, and self-medicated to relieve the symptoms.
He sought treatment at the private Kiang Wu Hospital on Monday as his condition worsened with shortness of breath. While being diagnosed and treated, he suddenly collapsed. He was subsequently diagnosed with influenza A accompanied by cardiac and respiratory arrest.
The patient was put on a ventilator and transferred to the intensive care unit (ICU).
He remained in a critical condition at the time of Monday’s statement.
The man did not travel outside Macau during the incubation period. He had received a seasonal influenza vaccination, the statement said.
A family member who lives with him had previously been diagnosed with influenza A.
