Typhoon ‘Noul’ spares Macau; observatory lowers all storm signals

    Typhoon “Noul” has spared Macau.

Macau’s Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) cancelled all tropical cyclone signals at 5 o’clock this afternoon.

According to the SMG website, the bureau hoisted Standby Signal No. 1 at 10 p.m. on Friday and Strong Wind Signal No. 3 at 6 p.m. yesterday.

As of 5 p.m., according to the bureau, Tropical Storm “Noul” was estimated to be about 180 km north of Macau and forecast to move north-northwest at around 15 km/h, gradually moving inland and weakening. During its development, “Noul” was temporarily classified as a severe typhoon, because of which the local weather station had, for a period of time, considered the probability of hoisting Typhoon Signal No. 8 as “low to moderate”.

Early today, the Hong Kong Observatory hoisted Gale or Storm Signal No. 9 for six hours.

Both Macau and Hong Kong follow a 5-level tropical cyclone signal system: 1, 3, 8, 9, and 10.

Due to “Noul”, over 70 flights were reportedly cancelled by Macau International Airport.

No injuries or major property damage were reported in Macau during the storm.
