Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) President Deland Leong Wai Man and committee member Ieng Weng Fat announced yesterday that an exhibition commemorating the 160th anniversary of Dr Sun Yat-sen’s* birth will be held in October.

The government-appointed Cultural Development Consultative Committee held a regular meeting yesterday at the Macau Cultural Centre (CCM) in Nape. The meeting was chaired by Leong in her capacity as the acting president of the committee.

At the post-meeting press conference, Leong outlined the outcomes of the 24th Greater Pearl River Delta Cultural Cooperation Meeting, which was held earlier this month in Zhuhai. She added that the conference covered cooperation across multiple areas, including culture, museums and heritage, intangible cultural heritage, libraries, and the cultural and creative industries. Initiatives discussed included joint touring exhibitions among museums in the three regions, collaborative intangible cultural heritage exhibitions, the sharing of archival and documentary resources, and performances and presentations by cultural and creative industry professionals, Leong said.

Committee member Ieng also noted that fellow members had expressed concern regarding the promotional efforts for the centenary of the birth of Macau musician Doming Lam (林樂培).**

Leong further announced that her bureau has built a small stage at the Outdoor Performance Venue in Cotai, and welcomes arts groups and community associations to make use of it. Details on how to book the facility will be announced shortly, she said.

According to Leong, the area also features sports facilities, including parent-child and three-on-three basketball courts for public use.

In addition, to mark the 160th anniversary of Dr Sun Yat-sen’s birth, Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macau will hold related exhibitions around October, Leong said, adding that the specific budget and venue details will be announced later.

*Dr Sun Yat-sen (孫中山, 1866-1925) was a towering revolutionary, physician, and political philosopher widely revered as the “Father of modern China.” He played the central role in overthrowing the Qing Dynasty and establishing the Republic of China (ROC), which preceded the People’s Republic of China (PRC), ending over two millennia of imperial rule. – Gemini, MPD

*Doming Lam (林樂培, 1926–2023) was a seminal composer, conductor, and promoter widely revered as the “Father of New Music in Hong Kong.” Born in Macau, his long and influential career successfully bridged the gap between avant-garde Western techniques and traditional Chinese roots, placing Hong Kong firmly on the global contemporary music map. – Gemini
