The University of Notre Dame* Folk Choir will present “Drawn Back to the Table”, a musical adaptation of the Passion and Resurrection, on May 24 at 8 p.m. The performance is scheduled to take place in the Fátima Centenary Auditorium at the University of Saint Joseph’s (USJ) Ilha Verde Campus.

Created by JJ Wright and Tristan Cooley, the music-drama is based on biblical scripture, religious tradition, and a collaborative development process between Notre Dame students and professional artistes. The narrative is structurally framed around the biblical “Road to Emmaus,”** utilising a variety of musical styles and theatrical expressions to explore themes of suffering, injustice, love, and humility.

The Folk Choir serves as one of the principal liturgical choirs for the University of Notre Dame, performing weekly during the academic year at the 12 p.m. liturgy in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart. The ensemble comprises students from a wide range of academic disciplines who are brought together by a shared interest in music and the exploration of their faith. Following the tenets of Blessed Basil Moreau***, the group aims to connect the hearts and minds of both its members and the congregations they serve through sacred song. Notably, J.J. Wright, trained as a jazz improviser and is passionate about sacred music; he is also the director of the choir.

**”The Road to Emmaus” is a story from the Gospel of Luke (chapter 24, verses 13-35) about the resurrected Jesus appearing to two of his followers on the very day of his resurrection. They don’t recognise him at first, but he explains the Scriptures to them, and they finally realise who he is when he breaks bread with them. – DeepSeek
